The 2027 solar eclipse.
Cruise or land?
To see totality on 2 August 2027, what matters is where you will be during the total phase. On a cruise, check the ship’s planned position; on land, check the address and viewing point. A port on an itinerary or a room reservation alone does not answer that question.
What to compare before booking
| Decision | Cruise | Land stay |
|---|---|---|
| Position during totality | Ask for the planned position, whether sailing or docked, and the plan if the port call changes. | Check the viewing point’s coordinates; they may differ from the overnight address. |
| Sightline and access | Confirm the allocated deck, capacity, obstructions and access from your cabin. | Confirm permission, hours, capacity and obstructions from the exact space. |
| Timing | A port city’s contacts do not necessarily describe a moving ship. | Use contacts calculated for that point and its local civil time. |
| Changes and weather | Ask what happens if the itinerary changes or viewing from the planned position is impossible. | Arrange a permitted, reachable alternative; avoid depending on a last-minute transfer. |
| Total cost | Check transport, excursions, viewing, equipment and cancellation in the operator’s terms. | Separate the room, viewing space, transport and digital service; request the total in writing. |
For an example of terms to read, Cunard’s Q716 voyage page says weather and itinerary changes, including departure times, can affect viewing. Check current terms and availability directly with the operator. This is not a purchase recommendation or an exhaustive comparison of cruises.
Three land reference points with comparable data
These are calculated guide reference points, not accommodation offers. All times in this comparison use CEST (UTC+2). They are not necessarily the destination’s local clock.
- Gibraltar: 4 min 29 s of totality; 10:45:34–10:50:03 CEST.
- Tangier: 4 min 52 s of totality; 10:44:41–10:49:33 CEST.
- Luxor: 6 min 23 s of totality; 12:02:10–12:08:33 CEST.
Check the path on the official NASA map and compare other 2 August 2027 locations. A longer duration does not guarantee better weather, access or an unobstructed view.
Questions to send the provider
- Where will we be at the start and end of totality, and which coordinates are you using?
- Which viewing space is included, and how is access allocated?
- Who provides solar viewers and safety instructions?
- What happens to the plan and price if the itinerary changes or cloud prevents viewing?
- Which payments, taxes, transfers, cancellations and capacity limits are confirmed in writing?
Follow the NASA solar safety instructions. Being on a ship or terrace does not change the need for protection during the partial phases.
What EclipseStay Spain offers
EclipseStay Spain does not sell cruises or package tours. The service connects travellers with hosts proposing overnight stays, viewing-only spaces or both. Recruitment destinations do not establish availability. The waitlist, digital access and price agreed with a host are separate items.

Frequently asked questions
Does a cruise guarantee seeing totality?
No. Check the planned position during the total phase and the terms covering itinerary changes and weather. A port or cruise name does not replace that check.
Can I use a port timetable for a ship?
Only if the coordinates and position during the eclipse match that calculation. A moving ship needs a viewing plan for its planned position with the time zone specified.
Does EclipseStay Spain book cruises?
No. It provides a digital service connecting travellers and hosts. A stay or viewing space is agreed and paid directly with the host.
